Last week, Foursquare revealed it was dropping Google Maps from its Web-based offering. This week, Foursquare was joined by Apple, which has abandoned Google Maps in iPhoto for iOS (specifically the new Journals and slideshow features). GoogleMaps used to be the preferred alternative to MapQuest in all location-based applications, mainly because it was the most reliable and free. In recent years, Google has tried to profit from this trend by announcing pricing for usage of Google Maps. This has lead many companies to search for alternative producers, like OpenStreetMap, MapBox, etc.
