Nokia falls out of Top 5 smartphone vendors while Samsung ships twice as many phones as Apple

Nokia, once the leading global smartphone manufacturer, has fallen so far behind Samsung and Apple that it no longer registers as a Top 5 vendor, according to market analysts IDC. Nokia has ranked among the Top 5 vendors since IDC first began tracking smartphone shipments in 2004, but the company fell behind Research In Motion, which shipped 7.7 million handsets in the quarter. That was a 34.7 percent decline from RIM’s shipments during the same period last ear, but it was still higher than the performance turned in by Nokia.
