Instagram’s Sponsored Advertising

Spinning off of the article that Farhood posted about pop-up ads and take-over ads negatively effecting user experience, now Instagram has implemented advertisements. Unlike the negative backlash of the full screen take-over ads, Instagram ads seem to be pretty effective and well-received. Although still in the beta testing with only a few brands implementing Instagram into their ad campaigns, it will be interesting to see if this is something that catches onto other companies and if it will prove to be beneficial.

Gloves as disruptive technology?

This article lists the best touchscreen gloves – in my opinion this is a form of disruptive technology, although a stretch. With the trends in the use of mobile technology and the combination of cooler weather, these gloves are going to be a must have that you didn’t know you needed until you tried to use your phone in below freezing weather.

Tablets Soon Pass PCs in Sales

This is an interesting read on the outrageous sales in tablets compared to PCs. The article highlights predictions Steve Jobs made about the future of his company before his passing and how society has proved him wrong. In particular is his thought that mini tablets wouldn’t compare to regular sized ones which has turned out to be wrong – iPad Mini out-sells the original.

Targeted Tweets

In this article Mashable covers Twitter’s new tool for composing geo-targeted tweets. The ultimate goal is to take brands with multiple international Twitter accounts and combine them into one but still have separate tweets for separate locations. The article is unclear if the specific tweets are just divided by country or even more specific locations. I’m also interested to know how this will work if people chose to opt-out of having location services and GPS turned on their smartphone.

“the benefit is minimizing the number of social accounts to manage, creating a more direct funnel for consumer feedback.”

Mobile Messaging Apps discuss Advertisments

This article discusses the option of advertising in mobile messaging apps such as WhatsApp. This grants a privacy concern for many and also would kill the audience of the app.  “It’s too easy for ads and poorly planned brand messaging to spoil a user’s experience on mobile.”

Facebook Expanding Advertising

Facebook  is expanding an advertising service, letting marketers target customers on mobile devices based on their online activity outside of the social network.

This has already been in place when using a desktop to use the site but now it will apply to mobile as well.

Facebook Privacy Change…again

Yesterday, Facebook announced yet another privacy change. This one will supposedly let users search your profiles for anything via the graph search tool they launched earlier this year. I doubt this will have any immediate effect seeing as how many users still don’t know what graph search is. It will be interesting to see what effect this will have on the future of mobile and digital and younger generations, both negative and positive.

Study Finds Girls More Ttech-Savvy Than Boys

The company I interned for this past summer recently published a study claiming girls to be more tech savvy than boys.

The article references the increased access to mobile technologies and even refers to a child’s bedroom as “multimedia hubs.”

I found this study to be particularly interesting because I am an executive member of WISE here on campus, where we promote and encourage women working to build a career in IT.

In short: girls rule, boys drool.

This article is an interesting read about the future of both mobile and the restaurant industry. Forbes discusses the issue of decreased wages and cutting labor costs but Chili’s counteracts with claiming this process to be seen as a team sport that won’t effect server’s future. It will be interesting to see if other restaurants pick up on this and how the tablets will hold up after a round of 2-for-1 margaritas!

Google Glass App Teaches Sign Language

SMARTSign teaches ASL (American Sign Language) to Glass wearers. This is revolutionary in the sense that it’s disruptive to the original form of learning a  foreign language, even computer programs that teach ASL. For those without Google Glass, there is an Android app as well.

You thought you were ad-free

In the Nielsen Smartphone Insights Report discussed in class, we learned that Americans claimed their TV watching experience hasn’t changed since owning a mobile device. However, This article zeros in on another Nielsen statistic: “the average person spent 8 hours and 20 minutes per month streaming video in the first quarter of this year, nearly three hours than a year earlier.”

It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
