Adobe and App Development

Adobe has a long history of being involved with the development and advancement of the Web, and has led the vision of a more creative online design surface with breakthrough interactivity. With scalable vector graphics (SVG), Adobe initiated creative vector graphics for the web that are now critical in a world of high resolution mobile devices and the applications that have become so popular on them.

Today’s world is different than it was even a few years ago. Adobe addresses this with focused, task-oriented tools and a lean development process to validate and iterate on the tools to incorporate feedback quickly.

But how do Adobe make that possible? Because of the ever-changing landscape in Web standards, app and gaming development, Adobe released experimental tools and prototypes quickly on what they call Adobe Labs. And since that process of agile, iterative development worked so well, Adobe made it a fundamental aspect of our Creative Cloud offering – rapid fixes and improvements based on real user feedback and reports.

Appboy Introduces Location Targeting for Increased Mobile Engagement

Mobile relationship management company Appboy has announced the launch of location targeting within its mobile toolset.

The location targeting feature will allow developers to isolate specific users, based on location, and send them multi-channel messaging in the form of push notifications, in-app messages, emails and more. A shopping app, for instance, could provide a notification to users who are close to one of the app’s supported stores.

Appboy believes retailers in particular can benefit from this new technology. A recent study by Parago found that 58 percent of all adult smartphone users regularly “showroom,” or shop for items in real world stores only to actually purchase them online at competing retailers.

Using Appboy’s technology, the company says it could allow those brick-and-mortar stores to send a notification (perhaps containing a coupon or other special offer) to users when they’re nearby, increasing the likelihood of a visit or sale.

Lockbox secures mobile files by providing file encryption on the platform

“We recognized that the cloud was coming, so while everybody was focused on getting as many people as possible on the cloud, security and privacy really took a backseat. We recognized that people were giving up their privacy in their rush to get on the cloud, and we saw an opportunity to make things more secure.”

-Peter Long, CEO of Lockbox

Instead of putting all of the security and privacy in the data center, with Lockbox, the app enables users to encrypt the data before it leaves their computer or smartphone, and the encryption is done with keys that only the user has, not Lockbox.

Since data is encrypted  by the users, and since Lockbox doesn’t have the key for the encryption, it would be impossible for anyone other than the user to read (unless the user gives out the key).

This gives the everyday user the ultimate combination of both sharing and privacy.

Airpush acquires Hubbl to release native mobile advertising platform

Mobile ad platform Airpush has announced its acquisition of Hubbl, developer of mobile personalization and native advertising technology. The acquisition will see the pair partnering to bring more effective native advertising to Airpush’s ecosystem of 120,000 mobile apps, via an ad platform that’s currently in development.

Native advertising on mobile has not been as accessible to mainstream app developers, and this partnership plans to change that.

The mobile approach to native advertising has the same overall goal, that being to offer less intrusive, and yet more effective ads to users, while also removing the reliance on usually ineffective banner ads.

Hotspotio app allows WiFi sharing on Android

Hotspotio has released Version 1.1 of its new Android Wi-Fi sharing application of the same name. Hotspotio aims to give all Android users access to fast mobile internet connections, by allowing them to share wi-fi networks with friends in exchange for simple favors.

Hotspotio allows users to browse for Wi-Fi access posts on the in-app map system, and push notifications will tell the network owner when someone new has signed on. Users can set up their own networks with a custom name (and even password), and then list things they’d like to receive in exchange for letting people access the network.

Favors can be a simple as giving the person a hug, to offering to Like a Facebook post, giving a shout-out or follow on Twitter or buying the person a drink. The service can be used by individuals, but is also appropriate for businesses to offer free Wi-Fi to the public in exchange for Likes on company Facebook pages, for example.

MEF launches AppPrivacy tool for creation of short, simple privacy policies

The AppPrivacy online tool will give developers of any size, in any country, access to creating short-form and consumer friendly privacy policies.

In a recent study of the Top 100 free apps across iOS and Google Play, MEF found that only 55 percent of apps offered access to a privacy policy before the app was downloaded, and that only 32 percent offered access to the policy within the app itself. Compounding the issue, of the privacy policies that do exist, over 69 percent of them were written in confusing or long-form language, containing over 750 words each.

AppPrivacy encourages developers to create privacy policies that are shorter and easier to understand, allowing users to know what elements of their information will be gathered and how it will be used. The tool generates privacy policies using a series of questions that determine how the app will use or gather a user’s data, and them creates a simple-to-read privacy policy that can be later customized and embedded directly into the app in question.
