FCC to discuss lifting cellphone ban on in-flight voice calls and cellular data

Recently theĀ United States Federal Aviation Administration has cut passengers a break by finally allowing them to use their smartphones on tablets in-flight as long as they are in “airplane mode” which cuts off all data and internet connection. This was based on worry that the radio signals would interfere with avionics. Now, the FCC is proposing that passengers may make in-flight phone calls and use cellular data above 10,000 feet. However, this service would only be available on specially equipped planes. This would greatly change the way the average person spends their time while traveling by air. Hopefully the FCC passes this proposal in December.

Boeing rolls out iPad app suite for airplane maintenance crews

Airlines have never put mobile technologies to serious use until now. Boeing has officially released a series of apps that allow their employees to service their massive jets. The app suite contains several apps that allow them to quickly access manuals, maintenance documents, retrieve information about part availability, collaborate with coworkers and much more. Furthermore, it is estimated that this switch to using an iPad will save 4000 pieces of paper per day.
